The Resort is beautiful. The hotel is a horseshoe and we
had a room that was directly over the sand. The room has
a huge balcony that over looks the water. This is not a brand
new resort but everything is immaculate.

week in May 2008. We had a wonderful time. The hotel was

Traveling Alone?

The dreaded single supplement is a true trip killer. Tour operators look at the single traveller as a revenue drain, compared to funds netted with pairs that book. With hotels basing rates on double occupancy, solo participants take on the burden of making up the financial shortfall. Travel costs for them can be double or more for the same vacation packages.

Many would rather stay home than feel like they are being punished for not having a companion, or not wanting to bring them along. Single supplements send the wrong message. Translated, they are akin to: “We don’t want you on the trip, unless you’re willing to compensate us financially.”

It’s not the tour operators’ fault. Hotel rooms are designed with twos in their brains. It is difficult to find a hotel that even offers single rooms. And far too often, restaurants view the solo traveller as someone who is not going to linger, drink, and ring up a significant bill. Singles rhyme off all the times they were seated in a back dark corner, while pairs sat up front at sunny tables.

You can argue that there are so many more travel services that cater to solo travellers, and that is true. Many tour operators kindly pair up singles with other singles so that travel costs are kept in check. But that has some drawbacks. People are like chemicals - some mix well together, and some don’t. Being placed in an intimate setting such as a hotel room and having a complete stranger seeing you in your big, support-top, grandma-like underwear isn’t a fun time.

The less-than-stellar treatment of singles is biting the travel industry on its butt. It may be losing an opportunity to tap into a market that is becoming increasingly powerful. Singles now make up more than 25 per cent of the population. To encourage their travel, and have them feeling comfortable doing so, requires a major attitude adjustment that can be translated in solo friendly accommodations and tour packages. There’s nothing wrong with “wanting to be alone” and exploring the world on one’s own. Garbo would have been proud.

Becoming ill while traveling in a foreign country can be frightening, so it is best to be prepared before you leave home. Taking the following measures can minimize inconvenience and distress should you become ill while traveling in a foreign country.

Preventing illnesses before you leave:

Check insurance coverage with your carrier and, particularly, whether or not you are covered while traveling abroad. Ask for advice on medical care while traveling.
If your insurance policy does not cover you abroad, you may wish to consider purchasing a short-term health insurance policy that does. There are short-term policies specifically designed to cover travel. For more information, contact your travel agent or look for information in travel magazines.
Be sure to have your health insurance identification card and a claim form with you while traveling.
Medicare does not provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States, so senior citizens may want to contact the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for information about foreign medical care coverage with Medicare supplement plans.
Be sure to complete the information page on the inside of your passport, providing the name, address, and telephone number of someone to contact in case of emergency. This will help to facilitate identification in case of an accident.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, carry a letter from your primary care physician describing the condition and any prescription medications you are currently taking, including generic names for these drugs.
Be sure to leave any medications you are taking with you outside of the United States in their original containers, clearly labeled. Some medications are considered to be illegal narcotics in foreign countries, so you may want to check with the foreign embassy of the country you are visiting to be sure.

Bangkok is the world's best city and the Galapagos are the best islands, according to an online survey by Travel and Leisure magazine.

Bangkok moved to the top of the list for the first time, replacing last year's winner Florence, which fell to number five, while the Galapagos Islands replaced Bali at the top of the best islands category.

Other winners in the yearly poll included Singapore Airlines as best airline, while best hotel went to the Singita Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park lodges. The results were compiled from votes cast by subscribers over a three month period. A special awards ceremony for each category winner will follow on 24th July in New York.

Travelling With A Computer · Anyone who's had to go on a work trip knows the difficulty of trying to stay connected and productive can be challenging. Here are a few tips to help you protect a laptop or notebook while you're going from coast to coast.

Most people who buy their own laptop or notebook computer will show some care when moving it about, and they should, since their hard earned money is at risk. What about those who are more lucky? Sure: most companies will purchase computer equipment on behalf of their employees, but when you're 1,000 miles and three days from coming back into the office for a replacement, you may have to rethink your confidence.

Laptop cases come in three categories:

1- The lowest is given to a briefcase or backpack that is not made to carry a laptop, but happens to fit the laptop inside anyways. If you've ever travelled with children, you've probably heard the dreaded "Are we there yet?" more than enough for one lifetime, but there are definitely things you can do to keep everyone occupied and happy. With a combination of advance planning and strategies while on your trip, you can avoid frustration, keep everyone busy, and improve the experience for the entire family.

Planning in advance for kids should definitely include more than getting everything packed. Take a trip to a dollar store and buy a collection of small cheap toys, including travel games and things that you know the kids will like (avoid fighting by making sure you buy separate things for each child), then wrap each of them up individually. Once you're on the plane or in the car, tell the kids that if they're good they can have one every hour (make sure you have enough for the entire duration of the trip!), this not only gives them an incentive to behave, but it also gives them something to look forward to on a regular basis while in transit, which helps prevent boredom (wrapping everything up drags it out a bit longer, and makes it feel more special). While you're shopping, pick up a few extras just in case, including travel games that you can pull out if everyone get bored and fidgety - avoiding boredom is the key to ensuring everyone gets there happy.

While on the road, you should also plan regular breaks to give everyone a chance to stretch. If you're on a plane, get up every hour and take the kids for a walk up and down the aisles, this not only helps with circulation but it also breaks up the flight and offers a different view than the back of an airplane chair. If you're in a car, plan a little extra time and stop every hour or two for the same reason - if possible, map out your route in advance and look for interesting stops along the way, it not only breaks up the trip but it also allows you to experience more than what you would have seen from the highway (and invariably gives you more of a flavour of your destination than what the standard tourist stops would offer) - if you're on the road for more than a few hours, stopping in local towns and supermarkets also gives you a way of buying snacks and lunches at a fraction of the cost of gas stations or highway restaurants (but try to avoid buying too many drinks for the car, unless you want to stop at the side of the road every ten minutes).

If you're driving with more than one child, seating arrangements can make all the difference - pair up children with adults and try to keep them physically separated (unless you're keen on hearing "Mommy, Susie poked me again"), or at least try to make sure that every child has a window seat to keep them amused. Driving games that involve spotting random objects/signs, or taking turns playing "I Spy", can make a day of driving seem like a breeze (most game stores offer playing card versions of these games that involve random objects and methods of scoring points) - these activities are great because they not only keep the whole family occupied, but they also cater to kids and adults of any age.

Most of all, ensure that your itinerary includes something for everyone. Try to plan for at least one major stop for just the kids - an amusement park or other attraction geared towards kids does two things: it gives them something to look forward to while they're visiting grown-up tourist attractions, and also gives them something that they know is just for them (and often becomes the highlight of their trip). If your schedule doesn't allow for an extra stop, be sure to check for children's activities at the places you're visiting (most tourist attractions make an effort to cater to children in some way). If you make a point of looking, you can almost always find enough activities to make every outing special and memorable for the whole family.

Lost luggage seems to keep piling up. Here are some tips to keep your checked bags safe.

"Where are my bags?" It's a question more weary travelers may be asking these days. In fact, the number of lost or mishandled baggage has doubled in the past five years, according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT). Statistics reveal that in the first nine months of 2007 alone, there were 3.45 million reports of lost luggage in the United States.

It's a woe felt by travelers across the world. SITA, the IT provider which tracks baggage information for airlines in 220 countries and territories, says that for the nearly two billion of passengers who move through airports each year, 30 million bags are mishandled or lost. Luggage mishaps cost the air transport industry about $2.5 billion annually.

The worsening problem on both sides of the Atlantic are thought to be caused by increased airport congestion and security regulations, tight turn around times and spiraling passenger numbers, all of which cause delays and complicate handling procedures.

Avoid baggage blues

The prospect of lost luggage fills even the most seasoned traveler with dread. Most of us know the feeling all too well: you're waiting and waiting at the baggage carousel when the steady flow of bags onto the conveyor belt begins to slow – and then finally stops altogether. Your bags are nowhere to be seen.

Some travelers are so fearful of losing their luggage they resort to such drastic measures as refusing to check any bags at all, opting to make do with what will fit in a carry-on bag or shipping possessions separately. But if you're not prepared to go that far, here are 6 tips to help keep your checked luggage safe.

1. Arrive at the airport early. If you check in at the last moment: you may make the flight, but your bags may not. The more time the airline has to get your bag onto the plane, the more likely it will actually arrive at your destination. If you're changing plans, try to book flights that allow ample time for baggage transfer. Staying on the same carrier can also help.

2. Make sure you receive a claim check for every bag that you check. Also verify that the agent checking your bags attaches a destination tag to each bag. (To avoid confusion, remove tags from previous trips.) Finally, check to see that these tags show the correct three-letter code for your destination airport.

3. Use colourful tags, labels or straps for easy spotting. Many bags look alike, so a distinctive marking or colours will help you identify your bag better – this could also deter would-be thieves.

4. Label your baggage with your name and contact information, including cell phone number. For security reasons, it's a good idea to use your business address instead of your home address. Remember to include labels on both the outside and inside of your luggage. That way if your external tag is removed, you still have the inside tag.

5. Pack important items such as medication, keys, eye glasses and laptops in carry on luggage. Other items which should not be checked include small valuables such as cash, credit cards, jewelry, cameras or irreplaceable items such as family heirlooms.

6. Keep a detailed list of what you packed in your baggage to facilitate any necessary claims.

Finally, since airlines offer limited liability for lost or damaged baggage, you may want to consider travel insurance to make sure your possessions are fully covered. Baggage and personal effects insurance may provide reimbursements for lost or damaged luggage and personal items.

And in the case of delayed baggage, insurance may also compensate for some of the costs of purchasing necessary toiletries and clothing. It may also help cover the replacement costs of passports, driver's licenses, birth certificates or travel visas in the event any one of these is lost or stolen.

Today is the day in Vancouver, BC were it's citizen happily welcome the first signs that summer is just around the corner. You know, one of those days where you use up a sick day. You wake up at 6am on a Friday (before the long weekend) and by the time 8am rolls around the temperature is already nearing the high double digits before topping out at 20 degrees. At that point you call work and tell them that you're not making it in. They ask way and you simply reply, "Because I feel too damn good to be in the office today!"

It's one of those days in Vancouver where all the cars are shined, rims polished, tops are dropped and the systems bangin'. The men are all finely groomed and the ladies wearing the booty shorts and sun dresses. Break dancers post up hard on Robson Street behind the Vancouver Art Gallery as pass byers enjoy the entertainment.

Just over the Burrard Bridge which connects downtown Vancouver to Kitsilano, the atmosphere is just as lively. A man walking his dog says to his friend, "Man, everyone is out here!" And he was absolutely right. Every section of the beach is occupied. Volleyballs are being spiked, foreign exchanged students are joggling soccer balls, footballs being tossed, and one family even brought out the mini bar-b-q. A father is playing an aggressive game of Frisbee with his two young boys. Molsen's Cold Shot beers are being discreetly (so they think) sipped on. Two lovely ladies sun bathe as they smoke a large hookah pipe like it ain't nobody's business. What seems to be a 6 month old baby kicks and coo's happily on a beach towel.

Man, you were so right "Everyone and their momma's are out today!"

And as the sun positions Itself to set for the day, the Watermark Restaurant - positioned on Kit's beach front - is full to the max as people wind down their day. It's Friday night before the start of a long weekend and the temperature is still at 17 degrees.

What Really Saves Gas? And How Much?

With gas prices so high, the media is awash with lists of gas-saving tips. Well how's this for a tip? If you listen to us, you can see hybrid-type savings without having to buy a new car.

By changing your driving habits you can improve fuel economy up to 37 percent right away (depending on how you drive). Combine several tips and perform routine maintenance and you will save real dollars, not just pennies.

A miracle? All we did was take several of the most common tips out there and put them to the test over a remote 55-mile route in the high desert of California. Some of them worked like a charm. Some of them didn't work at all. We'll give you the breakdown.

These tests were done under real-world conditions — not in a government lab somewhere. Our results can be matched by anyone — even you.

The wonderful part about what we found is that improving your car's mileage is just a matter of changing your habits. Stack a few of these winners together and we'll bet that you'll see a substantial savings at the pump — without the need for a new car.

Test #1 Aggressive Driving vs. Moderate Driving

Result: Major savings potential

The Cold Hard Facts: Up to 37 percent savings, average savings of 31 percent

Recommendation: Stop driving like a maniac.

This is gonna hurt. Our tests showed that the most significant way to save gas is: you. And we're talking massive fuel economy gains. Think you need a hybrid? Chances are you've got hybrid-style mileage in your gas pedal foot. Don't mash the gas when you start up. Take the long view of the road and brake easy. This tip alone can save you unbelievable amounts of gas. If you slowed your 0-to-60-mph acceleration time down from your current 10 seconds to a more normal city pace of 15 seconds, you'll feel the savings immediately.

Method: We conducted this test four times. The first time we did the full 55-mile loop once by accelerating aggressively 15 times at 3/4-throttle from zero to a cruising speed of 75 mph. We also applied the brakes hard to come to a full stop. Then, we drove the second loop by accelerating moderately 15 times at 1/4-throttle to a cruising speed of 70 mph. We braked lightly to a full stop. In the second set of tests we drove 25 miles making 25 rapid accelerations to 65 mph at 3/4-throttle. After 1 minute of cruising we braked hard and repeated the cycle up to 65 mph. We then drove the same distance making 25 moderation accelerations to 60 mph at 1/4-throttle. After 1 minute of cruising we applied the brakes easily and came to a full stop.

Test #2 Lower Speeds Saves Gas

Result: Substantial savings on a long trip

Cold Hard Facts: Up to 14 percent savings, average savings of 12 percent

Recommendation: Drive the speed limit.

Remember a thing called the speed limit? On most highways it is either 65 or 70 mph. How fast are the cars and trucks around you going? From 75 mph to 90 mph. These people are wasting a lot of gas for the chance to get there a little earlier. Factor in safety concerns and a speeding ticket once or twice a year and going fast is a costly proposition.

Method: This test was simple. For 50 miles we drove with the cruise control set at 65 mph. Then, for another 50-mile stretch we drove with cruise set at 75 mph. We repeated this test going in the opposite direction. It is amazing how obvious the difference in gas mileage was. Just think what would have happened if we had slowed down to 60 mph. The only problem is with impatient drivers behind you. One driver became so irate that he tried to run our editor off the road. Still, if you are pinched by gas prices. Leave a little early and drive the speed limit (in the slow lane).

Test #3 Use Cruise Control

Result: Surprisingly effective way to save gas

Cold Hard Facts: Up to 14-percent savings, average savings of 7 percent

Recommendation: If you've got it, use it.

Using cruise control is a bit of gas-saving advice frequently on tips lists. We have always agreed with this tip in theory but we hadn't expected such significant results. First, it smooths out the driver's accelerator input by preventing nervous "surging." Second, it makes the driver take the long view of the road rather than reacting to every change in the traffic around them.

Method: We did this test twice with four different cars each time driving the 55-mile loop. The first time we set cruise control to 70 mph. The second time, with the cruise control off, we varied our speed between 65 mph and 75 mph. We tried to mimic the driving style of a person who is in moderate freeway traffic.

One thing that's important to note: if you are in a mountainous area you should turn off cruise. It will try to keep you up to the speed you've set and will use a lot of extra gas down shifting to lower gears to accomplish this.

Test #4 A/C On, Windows Up vs. A/C Off, Windows Down

Result: Nice in theory; not true in practice

Cold Hard Facts: No measurable difference (unless you open the sunroof, too!)

Recommendation: Please, make yourself comfortable.

This has got to take you back to the days with the family on vacation. Dad says, "Turn the A/C off! It wastes gas!" And Mom says, "We can't roll the windows down or everyone on the highway will think we can't afford A/C." And you're in the back roasting, hoping someone will win the argument so you can cool off.

Well, family psychology aside, if dads are still saying this, they aren't necessarily right. While the A/C compressor does pull power from the engine wasting some gas, the effect appears to be fairly minimal in modern cars. And putting the windows down tends to increase drag on most cars, canceling out any measurable gain from turning the A/C off. But this one depends on the model you're driving. When we opened the sunroof in our SUV, the mileage did decrease even with the A/C off. Still, in our experience, it's not worth the argument because you won't save a lot of gas either way. So just do what's comfortable.

Method: We drove the full 55 mile-loop in two cars at equal speeds both times — 65 mph. The first loop we drove with the A/C on and the windows up. The second loop we drove with the A/C off and windows down. In the second test we drove 20-mile loops. This was far enough to see our gas mileage level off and remain steady on the computer trip meter.

Test #5 Check Your Tire Pressure

Result: Important for safety and to reduce tire wear

Cold Hard Facts: No measurable effect on the vehicles we tested

Recommendation: Check your tire pressure often but don't expect a big savings.

No matter how many times drivers hear about the importance of tire pressure, most of them don't do anything about it. They probably don't like squatting beside their car in a busy gas station with fumes swirling around them. But is it important? The answer is yes, for a number of reasons. Properly inflated tires are less likely to fail at high speeds. They wear more evenly and, yes, they deliver better gas mileage. How much? In this test we saw a modest difference in two of the cars. It might have been more dramatic with different tires on different cars. Experts swear by it; we couldn't really document it. And we wound up wondering if tire technology, like the design in other areas of the car, had improved.

Eventually, we concluded that each set of tires is different and every vehicle is different. We recommend that you do your own tests to see what inflation setting gives you the best fuel economy.

Method: We drove the 55-mile test loop four times at 60 mph — twice with tires at or above proper inflation. Once, we did the test with the tires 5 psi below the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. Since this produced very little difference we enlarged the gap and under inflated the tires by 8 psi. We felt that it was important to make sure the tires were inflated to the recommended level or above.

Test #6 Avoid Excessive Idling

Result: More important than we assumed

Cold Hard Facts: Avoiding excessive idling can save up to 19 percent

Recommendation: Stopping longer than a minute? Shut 'er down.

If you turn off a light bulb as you leave the room you'll save electricity. If you turn off your car you will save gas. Obviously. But related questions are more difficult to answer. If you're only stopping for only a minute, is it better to shut off the engine or keep it idling? Should I shut off the engine in traffic? How much gas will this save? What rule of thumb do I use when trying to save gas this way?

Method: We took two cars and drove a 10-mile route stopping 10 times for two minutes. We shut down the car each time. Then we drove the same route at the same speed and let the car idle for two minutes.

Conclusions

The good news is that you can drastically improve your gas mileage. The caveat is that you have to change your driving habits. If you are willing to change, you'll find many related benefits too: no speeding tickets, greater safety, reduced stress and lower repair bills for tires and brake pads. In the long run this will save you money. And who knows? You might like the new you.

Passport Requirement for Air Travel

Surprisingly after a full year, there still seems to be confusion around the subject of passport requirement, so I've taken the liberty to update everyone who is unsure of the regulations. Here is an article taken directly from the U.S. Customs & Border Protection.

Beginning today, Jan. 23, 2007, citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda are now required to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere. ( Homeland Security )

The department expects a smooth transition to the new passport requirement based on the current numbers of travelers arriving at U.S. airports with passports. Over 90 percent of U.S. citizens, 97 percent of Canadians, and virtually 100 percent of Mexicans and Bermudans flying to the United States over the past week arrived with passports.

The air requirement is part of the departments of State and Homeland Security’s Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). This change in travel document requirements is the result of recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission, which Congress subsequently passed into law in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004.

The only acceptable alternative documents to a passport for air travel will be the Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) and the NEXUS Air card. The MMD or “z–card” is issued by the U.S. Coast Guard to U.S. Merchant Mariners. The NEXUS Air card is issued to citizens of Canada and the United States, lawful permanent residents of the United States and permanent residents of Canada who meet certain eligibility requirements. The NEXUS Air card will only be accepted when used in conjunction with the NEXUS Air program at certain airports. The MMD card will only be accepted when used on official business by U.S. Citizen Merchant Mariners. All active duty members of the United States Armed Forces will be exempt from the requirement to present a valid passport when entering the United States. Legal Permanent Residents of the U.S. may re-enter on their I-551 Permanent Resident Card.

A separate proposed rule addressing land and sea travel will be published at a later date with specific requirements for travelers entering the United States through land and sea border crossings. As early as Jan.1, 2008, citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security to enter the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security responsible for the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

incredible vacation. With tax and service and everything included,
our total membership cost for both units for 8 days and seven nights
was $699. Obviously we checked around to see what we would have
paid elsewhere. Expedia was the only major travel provider with
availability at the time, and were asking $2,784.60 for the same unit
for the exact week.

Booking two of these units through Expedia would have cost us
$5,569.20 for just the accommodations. Our first booking through
membership saved us over $4800 on the accommodations alone.
We then booked our flight directly through the membership and
saved an additional $300 from what we would have paid through
Expedia.
